Australia runs single-digit geographic prefixes (02, 03, 07, 08), a 04 mobile range, and separately administered 13/1300/1800 smart numbers. A foreign business can usually get a number without an Australian entity, though 1300/1800 transfers move slower than standard porting.
Canada shares the North American Numbering Plan with the US. That means 10-digit local numbers, shared 800/888/877/866/855/844/833 toll-free ranges, and no separate mobile prefix. Most VoIP providers issue numbers to foreign businesses with no Canadian entity required.
France uses a unified 10-digit format across all lines. A foreign business can freely get an 01 to 05 geographic VoIP number or an 0800 toll-free number. But ARCEP reserves 06 and 07 mobile numbers for individual natural persons, so they are not a general-purpose business DID product.
Germany assigns geographic numbers by city (030 Berlin, 040 Hamburg) and requires a verifiable German address for those and for mobile numbers. It only exempts foreign businesses from local-address rules on 0800 toll-free numbers, so a UK or US company usually needs a German presence for anything else.
Ireland ties geographic numbers to physical presence in that numbering area under ComReg rules. But 0818 standard-rate and 1800 freephone numbers only need evidence of an Irish nexus, such as a CRO or VAT number. Porting downtime is capped at 1 working day.
The Netherlands is comparatively foreign-business friendly. An 0800 or geographic number can be requested with a foreign trade-register extract, though large-enterprise 088 blocks require Dutch KVK registration. Porting runs a fast 1 to 5 working days.
New Zealand has a small, tightly administered plan with just 5 geographic area codes, a 02x mobile range and 0800/0508 toll-free numbers. No NZBN is a hard telecom requirement, but many providers ask foreign businesses for one before issuing a number.
Portugal's numbering plan is small and fixed at 9 digits, always dialed in full. Geographic numbers need a NIPC for foreign businesses. Porting under ANACOM completes within 1 business day, with a capped 3-hour service interruption.
Singapore has no area codes, just 8-digit numbers nationwide. IMDA licenses only Singapore-incorporated carriers (FBO/SBO) to allocate them, so a foreign business without a local entity or registered branch generally cannot get a local Singapore number directly.
Spain runs a 9-digit numbering plan with geographic numbers keyed to a NIF and matching address, plus mobile numbers on 6xx/7xx. Foreign businesses can typically get a 900 toll-free number with just tax and company documentation, all under a same-day porting standard.
The UK runs geographic numbers by area code, an 03 national-rate range that costs the same as a local call, 07 mobiles, and 0800/0808 freephone. A foreign business can usually buy any of these. But every UK number now needs an approved KYC bundle registered before it can make calls, as of July 2026.
The US shares the North American Numbering Plan with Canada: 10-digit numbers with no distinct mobile prefix, equal-tier 800-series toll-free ranges, and generally no local presence needed to buy a number. Call recording consent varies sharply by state, so a nationally calling business should assume the strictest rule applies.
