New Zealand has a small, tightly administered plan with just 5 geographic area codes, a 02x mobile range and 0800/0508 toll-free numbers. No NZBN is a hard telecom requirement, but many providers ask foreign businesses for one before issuing a number.

The Commerce Commission regulates porting under the Local and Mobile Number Portability Determination, most recently confirmed in December 2021 for a further 5 years, as of July 2026.

Mobile ports typically complete in 1 to 2 business days. Landline ports typically take 1 to 5 business days, with 3 to 4 working days of lead time often needed before the port executes.

The 111 Contact Code (revised June 2024) separately requires providers to warn customers that VoIP-based service, including ported numbers, can fail during a power outage.
