What is KYC?

Know Your Customer. Know Your Customer is the identity verification process phone and messaging providers run before activating a business account. It typically checks a business registration, address and the identity of an owner or admin.

Providers collect details like a registered business name, tax or company registration number, and a form of identification for the account owner. This happens before activating features like A2P messaging or number porting. This is driven partly by carrier requirements to reduce fraud and spam.

For a legitimate small business, KYC is usually a short onboarding step, not an ongoing burden. Submit business details once, get verified, and most features activate within a day or two.

Incomplete or mismatched KYC information (a business name that does not match the registered entity, for example) is a common reason messaging registrations get delayed or rejected. This happens more often than any actual compliance problem.

Worked example

A newly formed 2-person consultancy submits its business registration and owner ID during phone system signup.

Full messaging features activate within 24 hours once the details match public business registration records.

Why it matters to a small team

For a small business, KYC is a one-time paperwork step that activates full messaging and calling features. Skipping it or entering mismatched details is the most common reason a new account gets stuck in limited mode.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my phone provider need my business registration details?

Carriers require providers to verify who is behind an account before granting full calling and messaging capability, mainly to reduce fraud, spam and spoofed caller ID across the network.

How long does KYC verification usually take?

For a straightforward small business with matching registration details, verification often completes within 24 to 48 hours. Mismatched or incomplete information can extend this to a week or more.

What happens if I skip KYC verification?

Accounts typically stay limited, for example capped messaging volume or restricted number porting, until verification completes. Some features may simply not activate at all without it.
