Caller ID Name. CNAM is the database lookup that turns a phone number into the name displayed on a recipient's caller ID. This could be a business name instead of just digits. It has to be registered and kept current for a business number.
When a call is placed, the receiving carrier queries a CNAM database to find a name associated with the calling number. It then displays that name on screen. In the US this is a separate, sometimes paid, registration from simply owning a number.
A business that never registers CNAM often shows up as just a number, or worse, an outdated name from a previous owner of that number. This can look untrustworthy to a customer deciding whether to answer.
CNAM updates are not instant. Changes can take days to a few weeks to propagate across every US carrier's database. This is because each carrier maintains and refreshes its own copy on its own schedule.
Worked example
A 5-person marketing agency registers CNAM for their main number after noticing it displayed as "Unknown".
Within about 2 weeks, most major US carriers show the agency's name instead of just the number on customer caller ID.
Why it matters to a small team
For a small business, a number that displays as "Unknown" or a wrong name is far less likely to get answered by a new customer. Registering CNAM is a low-cost fix most providers support directly.
Most phone providers offer CNAM registration as a setting or add-on; the business submits the name it wants displayed, and the provider pushes it to major carrier databases, typically taking 1 to 3 weeks to fully propagate.
CNAM data is stored separately by each carrier, so a name update can appear on one network before another. Full propagation across all major US carriers can take several weeks.
The UK does not use the same CNAM database system as the US; UK caller ID display relies more on network-level number presentation, and business name display works differently across UK carriers.
