Enhanced 911. E911 is the US system that automatically sends a caller's registered address to emergency dispatchers. This happens when they call 911 from a VoIP phone. Unlike a traditional landline, a VoIP number needs that address entered manually and kept current.
Traditional landlines are tied to a fixed physical address dispatchers can look up automatically. VoIP numbers can move between locations, so providers require a registered address on file, called Registered Location. They send that address to 911 dispatch when a call comes in.
The Kari's Law and RAY BAUM'S Act, both in force as of July 2026, require systems to support direct 911 dialing without an access code. They also require systems to transmit a dispatchable location precise enough to identify a floor or room in multi-line setups.
The UK equivalent is 999 or 112, and address handling differs since the UK relies more on network-based location data. VoIP providers there still need accurate address information, but the regulatory framework is separate from the US E911 rules.
Worked example
A 4-person office moves to a new floor of the same building and updates its VoIP registered address within the admin portal.
A 911 call made the following week correctly routes dispatch to the new floor rather than the old address on file.
