Call screening lets someone see who is calling. Sometimes they can hear an automated prompt asking the caller to state their name, before deciding whether to answer, forward or send the call to voicemail.
Basic screening relies on caller ID: a name or number displays before the call is answered. More advanced screening asks the caller to say their name or reason for calling, which plays back to the recipient before they accept.
For a small business fielding cold sales calls and robocalls alongside real customers, screening cuts down interruptions without missing calls that matter. The recipient can choose to answer, decline to voicemail, or forward elsewhere.
Screening can also be rule-based. Numbers not in a contact list route straight to voicemail or an auto-attendant, while known customers ring straight through.
Worked example
A 2-person law office sets unknown numbers to announce the caller's name before ringing through.
They cut interruptions from cold sales calls by roughly half while still answering every genuine client call live.
Why it matters to a small team
A small team without a receptionist gets interrupted by every call whether it matters or not. Screening gives them a moment to decide, protecting focus time without risking a missed customer.
No, blocking prevents a number from reaching a phone at all, while screening still lets the call through to a decision point, showing who is calling or asking them to identify themselves first.
It reduces their impact by letting a recipient see or hear enough to decline instantly, but does not stop the call from coming through the way a dedicated spam-blocking feature does.
With name-announcement screening, yes, the caller is prompted to state their name and knows this is being played back. With caller-ID-only screening, the caller has no indication and experiences it as a normal ring.
