messaging
A short code is a 5 or 6-digit number used to send very high volumes of text messages. Think appointment reminders from a large chain, or one-time passcodes. It is separate from a business's regular 10-digit phone number.
Short codes are leased directly from carriers or aggregators, and cost several hundred to over a thousand dollars a month. They also go through a vetting process that can take 8 to 12 weeks. They exist because a single short code can send millions of messages a day, far beyond what a normal number handles.
Small businesses almost never need one. A short code makes sense for a national retailer blasting the same promotional text to hundreds of thousands of customers, not a local business with a few hundred contacts.
Because a short code is not a real phone number, customers cannot call it back. One short code is also often shared across many unrelated brands. That's part of why regular 10-digit numbers with A2P 10DLC registration became the standard path for most businesses.
Worked example
A national gym chain with 200 locations uses a short code to send class reminders to 500,000 members.
The short code handles the volume a normal business number legally could not, at a monthly lease cost of roughly $1,000.
Why it matters to a small team
For a 1 to 10 person business, a short code is almost always the wrong tool. It's too expensive, too slow to set up, and built for volumes no small team will hit. A registered long code number covers nearly every small-business texting need.
No, in almost every case. Short codes cost hundreds to thousands of dollars a month and take weeks to approve, built for organizations sending millions of texts. A registered 10-digit number covers small-business volume at a fraction of the cost.
No, short codes are text-only and are not associated with a callable phone line the way a regular business number is. Customers who want to speak to someone need a separate phone number listed alongside the short code.
Typically 8 to 12 weeks. Carriers review the use case, message content and opt-in process before approval, which is one reason most small and mid-size businesses use a registered long code instead.
