messaging
Application-to-Person 10-Digit Long Code. A2P 10DLC is the US carrier framework that lets businesses send automated or bulk texts from a standard 10-digit number. Registering a business and its messaging use case with carriers is required before high-volume texting works reliably.
US carriers built A2P 10DLC after bulk texting from unregistered numbers became a spam problem. A business registers its legal details through The Campaign Registry, and declares what it will text about (appointment reminders, order updates, marketing). It then gets a trust score that sets its daily message throughput.
Registration happens once per business, usually through the phone provider rather than directly. It takes anywhere from a few hours to two weeks, depending on carrier vetting. It also costs a small monthly or one-time registration fee on top of the phone plan.
Skipping registration does not block texting outright, but messages get filtered, delayed or blocked at low volume. A 3-person business texting a handful of customers a day may not notice. A firm texting hundreds daily will see failures without it.
Worked example
An 8-person retail business registers for A2P 10DLC and gets approved in 3 business days.
Their daily throughput moves from roughly 60 messages on an unregistered number to over 2,000 messages a day.
Why it matters to a small team
Any small US business planning to text more than a handful of customers a day needs A2P 10DLC registration. Without it, texts will silently fail to deliver. It is a one-time setup cost that avoids an ongoing, hard-to-diagnose deliverability problem.
Not directly. UK business texting runs through Ofcom-regulated shortcodes and sender ID registration rather than a carrier trust-score system like the US. Requirements are lighter for small-volume senders but marketing texts still need prior consent under PECR.
Typically a few hours to two weeks. Straightforward small-business registrations with a clear use case and matching website details usually clear carrier review within 1 to 3 business days; incomplete or mismatched information can add a week or more.
Messages are throttled to a very low daily limit and carriers increasingly filter or block unregistered traffic outright. Low-volume personal-style use may go unnoticed, but any consistent business texting pattern risks delivery failures without registration.
Yes, most providers pass through a one-time campaign registration fee plus a small recurring carrier fee, often a few dollars a month. It is separate from the per-message cost and applies per business, not per phone number.
