E.164 is the international standard format for phone numbers. It always starts with a plus sign and country code (for example +14155552671), so systems worldwide can dial the same number without ambiguity.
Before E.164, countries formatted numbers however they liked, which made international dialling and software integration messy. E.164 fixes a single format: plus sign, country code, then the national number, up to 15 digits total.
For a small business, E.164 mostly shows up behind the scenes, in CRM fields, API integrations and phone system settings. A number needs to be unambiguous, regardless of who is looking at it or which country they are in.
A US number in E.164 looks like +14155552671, and a UK number looks like +442071234567. Software that expects this format will reject or mis-dial numbers typed in local formats like (415) 555-2671.
Worked example
A 5-person sales team connects its phone system to a CRM for automatic call logging.
The integration only matches contacts correctly once every phone number in the CRM is stored in E.164 format, so a bulk clean-up of the contact list happens before the two systems are connected.
