Session Initiation Protocol. SIP is the signalling standard that sets up, manages and ends VoIP calls. It tells devices how to find each other and start talking. It is the plumbing most business phone systems and softphones run on.
SIP does not carry the voice itself. It handles the handshake: which device is calling, which one should ring, and when to hang up. The actual audio travels separately, usually over a protocol called RTP, once SIP has connected the two ends.
In a small business system, SIP runs quietly in the background every time someone taps "call" in an app. It is why the same business number can ring a phone, a laptop and a tablet at once. SIP simply tells every registered device to ring together.
Because SIP is an open standard, it lets different providers and hardware work together. That's similar to how email works regardless of who hosts it. A desk phone from one manufacturer can register with a completely different provider's SIP service.
Worked example
A 6-person agency uses SIP-based softphones on laptops instead of desk phones.
When a client calls the main number, SIP registers all 6 laptops as available, rings the 2 that are logged in, and connects the call in under a second once someone answers.
Why it matters to a small team
Most owners never need to touch SIP directly. But it explains why switching business phone providers rarely means buying new hardware. If a system is "SIP-based," existing desk phones or headsets usually keep working after the switch.
