What is BYOD?

Bring Your Own Device. BYOD lets employees use their personal smartphone or laptop for business calls and texts through an app. The business doesn't issue separate work-only hardware. The business number stays separate from the person's personal number.

With BYOD, a team member installs a business phone app on their own device. They log into their assigned business number or extension. Calls, texts and voicemail for work stay inside the app, kept apart from the person's personal calls and messages.

This avoids the cost of buying and managing separate work phones for a small team. It also keeps business communication (recorded, searchable, shared) out of an individual's personal call history.

The main tradeoff is that BYOD relies on employees keeping the app updated and their device secure. A business should have a way to remove access quickly if someone leaves.

Worked example

A 4-person sales team uses their own phones with a business calling app instead of the company issuing separate devices.

The business saves the cost of 4 work phones while keeping every sales call logged under the business number, not a personal one.

Why it matters to a small team

For a small business, BYOD avoids buying and maintaining separate hardware. It still keeps business calls, texts and records tied to the company, rather than scattered across personal devices.

Frequently asked questions

Does BYOD expose an employee's personal number to customers?

No, calls and texts through a business phone app use the assigned business number as caller ID, keeping the employee's personal number private from customers.

What happens to business access on BYOD when an employee leaves?

A business can typically revoke access to the business number or extension from an admin portal immediately, removing the person's ability to make or receive business calls without touching their personal phone.

Is BYOD less secure than issuing work phones?

Not inherently, since business communication happens inside a separate app rather than the device's native phone function, but it does rely on the employee keeping their own device reasonably secure and updated.
